<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.12 – Aesthetic Sensibility and Manifestation - When developing an aesthetic sensibility and skills, I’ve found that the following three parts are fundamental. This is the 3-step foundation I teach my design students (I have 12+ years experience of teaching design, and I LOVE it, do invite me for talks/workshops!)</image:title>
<image:caption>TO SEE. Practise noticing, discovering, feeling the beauty and abundance all around you. High or low, big or small, lasting or fleeting. TO COLLECT. Be a hunter gatherer for things that intrigue you. Your collection will tell you something about what you’re drawn to, what you can work with. Create a constantly work-in-progress aesthetic archive. TO DO. Experiment. Create with your hands. Move things around. Develop your skills and aesthetic sensibility through noticing what actually comes out when you create, not only “like” things. It might not be what you expected. Communicate. Iterate. Repeat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.12 – Aesthetic Sensibility and Manifestation - Distill complexity into a coherent, but sensory rich appearance.</image:title>
<image:caption>The more we get out of our head and into our hands, inviting real things, tactility, connecting things, layers of time and space, communicative aspects, cultural associations, trying what work together or not, the more intriguing and unique it gets. Coherence is important in my work, but it must never be flat and one-dimensional. I did a Materialboard every Monday for a whole year. See what happens if you step away from Pinterest (even though you start there) for a while.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.12 – Aesthetic Sensibility and Manifestation - In nature functionality and aesthetics are intertwined, never separated.</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course. It is us humans, who started separating things… it’s the same as we did with the misguiding separation of the body and the mind. This led to design being misunderstood, and perhaps misused as a superficial thing, a layer over a functional object, which is limiting the understanding of what we can do. To defend that, we say that ‘form follows function’ and so on, but it never really tells the whole story, does it. Our appreciation of and need of aesthetics is a highly complex, multi-faceted thing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.12 – Aesthetic Sensibility and Manifestation - Meaning and context matter and can shift our perception.</image:title>
<image:caption>If we create in a conscious way, in harmony with nature and the planetary boundaries, with ethic aspects, with dedicated small scale production, there’s a certain aesthetic in that too. The same way, what we perceived as beautiful yesterday, might suddenly no longer appear so, like with the fashion industry. Non-conscious brands might not even seem attractive anymore. It seems that our sense of beauty really is paying attention to the whole, so when we find out something that sort of disturbs the idea of what you first appreciated, the illusion is torn, and you see that glitch, inevitably shifting our perception. <image:caption>When it comes to sensory design, my go-to is always Juhani Pallasmaa. The Eyes of the Skin has been somewhat of a bible to me, and it’s even brought into the brand photo I use on my front page of entiere.se. <image:caption>This is a close-up of the exhibition structure for the project Stötta Vasa/Support Vasa, The aesthetic choices needed to work with the ship, but not steel the attention from its absolute wow-effect. It should co-exist in the overall space, but still invite the visitors to learn more about the biggest project since its salvation, and if possible, make donations. <image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.12 – Aesthetic Sensibility and Manifestation - Aesthetic has not only to do with the what, but also the how.</image:title>
<image:caption>How things are made are becoming increasingly important again. The process, the how, to me is essential both for the footprints it leaves, how it affects people and the planet, and also part of its story, of the aesthetic experience and interpretation. The aesthetic interpretation of a flower is only enhanced by us knowing that it is slowly unfolding, and not constant. Or take Jackson Pollok, when we think of his paintings, his actions, walking over the large scale paintings, pouring, splattering paint across the surface, is part of the perception of the pieces. When creating our Sequence screens, two people (me and my husband and collaborator) lays out, in trained synchronisation, each and every thread in the desired pattern. This kind of conscious creation, this ritual, I find will be a part of the aesthetic appearance. Probably should do a film about it…would you find that inspiring?</image:caption>

Image cred and link to a recent article in V Magazine. In the book A Poetry Handbook, the beloved poet Mary Oliver, whose work I often pick up, especially when I’m at our summer house (which I am now), walks readers through exactly how a poem is built, from meter and rhyme, to form and diction, to sound and sense. <image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.11 – Sunday thoughts on Co-Creation - This is Samuel T Herring. He is the Singer and Writer of the band Future Islands. I’ve loved this band for a very long time. So much strength and vulnerability at the same time. Like in this song Waking or the classic Spirit.</image:title>
<image:caption>Yesterday at the event, I was talking to a woman who felt held back by the ideas, perspectives and thoughts of some of the big names from the time she started working as a creative. Not actually something they expressed to her, but limiting thoughts from herself. I’ve felt that too, I guess most of us have. And at some point I got so tired of it. Especially feeling limited by people and perspectives I didn’t even resonate with? So as an antidote, I started putting together a list and visuals of people that actually do inspire me. This is a form of collaboration too. To find those who inspires you, letting go of (the thoughts of) those holding you back. Who inspires you?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sensory Richness was a curated installation, at Dahl Agenturer, exploring how to create spaces that speaks to all our senses, where both brands and people feel reel and alive and can engage on a deeper level. An immersive and multisensory event, we served snacks (in such fun collaboration with Linda Dahl), integrated, edible parts of the thematic material boards, inspired by barefoot walks on my favorite cliffs by the sea. For the opening night, I also held a talk on the theme, and connected afterwards with so many amazing people, who had felt that my thoughts resonated with them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Luckily, I have people around me who can really understand the vision and never skips a beat to jump on the train to make it happen and more. <image:caption>You said something about the process of capturing the colour schemes, getting it right according to what you’ve seen, was like “jazz”. Of course you had me there. An editorial photo from ln-cc on Max Mara, with a pony, just like the one I had, a Connemara, with the colour dun. She was called Honey. I had several horses after her. But she was my first own pony, so very special.</image:title>

When we can connect and show up authentically, the collaborations will start to work, will start to open up possibilities. Collective is the key word here, and Hutchings attempts to unite the different strands of the African diaspora, working with vocalists and rappers from both the UK and U.S. Black to the Future is highly accessible, politically engaged jazz that’s more focused on communication than individual experimentation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.9 – In These Times - What’s better suited as an anthem for the times we’re in than In These Times by Makaya McCraven. Since it’s release it’s been rotating on our record player, and we’ve also been to a fantastic concert, so full of pure energy, at Fasching.</image:title>
<image:caption>From Bandcamp: In These Times is an almost unfathomable new peak for an already-soaring innovator who has been called "one of the best arguments for jazz's vitality" by The New York Times, as well as recently, and perhaps more aptly, a "cultural synthesizer." While challenging and pushing himself into uncharted territories, McCraven quintessentially expresses his unique gifts for collapsing space and transcending borders – blending past, present, and future into elegant, poly-textural arrangements of jazz-rooted, post-genre 21st century folk music.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.7 – The Rich Layers of Time - As a designer I’ve always been interested in situations, moments, rather than mere functions. And how we can invite all our senses in rich experiences.</image:title>
<image:caption>Thursday evening one of my very favorite musicians, Amaro Freitas, a Brasilian piano jazz artist, performed at the jazz club Fasching here in Stockholm. The experience was so intense, so vibrant, I suddenly felt with such clarity that I was fully in the moment, not going anywhere, not separated from his absolutely wonderful playing, alone on stage, but using different tools to change the perception of what a piano can do. Tactility, flow, waves of melodies and emotions running from his skilled and expressive fingers. And at one point he invites us in as co-creators. A sense of ONEness in the space, so very far from the hostility in the political climate and events.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I find the act/art of arranging things quite comforting and a good way to start any creative session. Here a morning ritual on our Elevate podium.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.6 – How to stay sane as a Creative - A creative ritual can be so many different things, but the repetitive aspect seems to be of value. Writing Morning Pages is one. Have you tried those and the other beautiful rituals from The Artists Way?</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve done this in periods, and loved it. Starting each day writing three pages of whatever wants to come out is like a detox, enabling a fresher start. I also recommend the Artist Date (take yourself and only you, out on a creative date to something that inspires you).</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.6 – How to stay sane as a Creative - In one episode of the Fashion Neurosis podcast (that I’ve previously highlighted here), Nick Cave is on the couch and shares that he always wears a suit, yes, every day he gets dressed in the same stern look. Partly because the suit in particular does something with his body, his character and spirit. And partly because it’s a ritual, a repetition, a uniform, that never needs a morning filled with multiple choices or doubts.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve heard so many creative masterminds say the same thing (but with their own look, their own uniform).</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.6 – How to stay sane as a Creative - I too appreciate a very repetitive way of dressing. I use a lot of black. More and more crème. Simplistic though avant garde clothing, just a few pieces in great quality. I have a painter’s coat that’s not really a painter’s coat, rather a very long Comme des Garçons shirt, which I love. It’s so closely connected to my love for colour and paint. I almost always put on a large necklace round my neck to get ready.</image:title>
<image:caption>Since we left our studio this Summer, I’ve been working from home, and while I still kind of use a uniform of sorts, it’s really become a too sloppy one. The first very early spring light has come back and it’s time to shape up. Aspirational outfit: this Skipper jacket and pants set in recycled denim, by Toogood. Doesn’t hurt to bring in a little marine vibe as well. That’s a big part of me as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.6 – How to stay sane as a Creative - About arranging things. For a full year I kept a ritual practice, starting every Monday morning in the studio with putting together an inspirational moodboard or rather material board. While themes varied and sometimes were connected to a project, often they were more intuitive, what struck a cord – a colour combination, a loved object, an image – became the starting point.</image:title>

I wanted something deeper than the fresh cut wood/carpentry kind of scent that you get if you rely solely on the pine needle essential oil. I wanted you to be able to almost see and feel the moss and lichen, the blueberry bushes, the resinous proud stems.</image:title>
<image:caption>I imagined how in this sensory moment – Pine forest bathing – I was reaching my late grandmothers seaside cottage, where old and well worn rustic Pine furniture gave off a more mature, balsamic, pine wood scent. Scent is process. It changes, just as nature does. In an olfactory experience, there’s several layers unfolding. This intrigued me, and I felt, it was a story worth telling. I truly appreciate all you pine loving early adopters who felt this, bought by one of the 50 numbered handmade boxes, experienced it. Merci and to be continued. The second edition of For the Love of Pine will be released Spring 2025.</image:caption>

Even if you missed this, there are many interesting editions and themes explored.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.2 – The Importance of Values - The second of the learnings above reminds me of the book I’m reading at the moment. Isn’t it intriguing how, when you open a door to something creative to pursue, several other doors opens around the same theme, inviting you to further exploration and ensures you that you’re on the right path?</image:title>
<image:caption>Haruki Murakami’s latest novel The City and Its Uncertain Walls revolves around this theme of an inner sanctuary. A young couple, very much in love, explores together a city far away, an inner space, where the young girls reveals her real self actually live. There person he sees in front of him is just her shadow. This city come to live by their shared experiences. Surreal, intriguing and simplistic and inviting at the same time, as always with Haruki Murakami.</image:caption>

As I previously shared with you, I am pouring more energy and work into finding my own voice when declaring and sharing my design philosophy and invite others into my (brand) world.</image:title>
<image:caption>This has everything to do with values. Of aligning with them, of letting them sit front row when engaging with the world. Tonality is of course also about the how and the execution. I’m exploring this constantly by the work I do for clients, for my own brand world, objects and projects, from the book I’m working on that is a continuation of the explorative holistic project For the Love of Pine (left), from what I write in my journal and from writing these letters to you. I’m exploring and I’m learning. Feb 5 I’m participating in the Podcast Day hosted by my dear friend and DREAM LAB collaborator Anna Vogel (the blond head in the picture above). <image:caption>Let’s create inner worlds, where ideas, values and qualities comes to life. We can rest there, but also get a clearer point of view of what we want to create in this world, which people we allow in and how to invite them into the more public parts of our (brand) world. Next Sunday, I think we’re going to explore the potential with these worlds. How to build concepts, striving towards ONENESS in brand worlds and spatial experiences. But as I said, I want to keep these letters light and intuitive, so we’ll see where next week leads me. xxx Charlotte Ryberg In Pursuit of Beautiful Concepts</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The Anticipation Letters No.1 – A New Sunday Ritual - I finally got around to go see this Wim Wenders’ (who is a long time Japan lover) movie Perfect Days. I went by myself and came back with a renewed sense of gratitude for the small things, and a connection to the main character Hirayama (superbly played by Kôji Yakusho) and his rich inner life rather than status filled outer life. To me, that resonates so much to the actual starting point of being a creative, an artist, which can be so much more about seeing things, indulging in them with respect and awe, and an urge to capture it’s essence, recreate it, and share it with the world.</image:title>
<image:caption>From Imdb: Hirayama works as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He seems content with his simple life. He follows a structured everyday life and dedicates his free time to his passion for music and books. Hirayama also has a fondness for trees and photographs them. More of his past is gradually revealed through a series of unexpected encounters.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There’s infinite possibilities in telling stories with design. During a really great photoshoot with photographer and long-time friend Ea Czyz (yes please hit us up with more concept-photo-video-collabs in 2025) in his studio in Stockholm, I developed storytelling videos around the subject of restarting fashion (Omstart Mode), the new permanent exhibition at Textilmuseet in Borås. Interior designer for the exhibition was a long time collaborator, Marcia Harvey Isaksson, SqCircle, and I was assigned to create the exhibition graphics, branding and co-develop the concept. For this project, I also gained foundational skills in motion graphics – and lust for more (since my concept often wants to move, tell stories and do things..), let’s explore this further in joint projects in 2025.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Looking back to look ahead - Last year I rediscovered my love of writing, so 2025 I will dedicate myself to writing my book and communicating with you more frequently and with greater ease via this holistic design journal. Starting now, it will come in a shorter and more anecdotal version each Sunday, looking ahead to the week with anticipation. Another thing I wish to achieve is meet-ups with fellow creatives sharing and lifting each other. So here’s to finding and using one’s voice! Last year it was also time to let go of our beautiful studio space where amazing shared memories were made for three years. Where next chapter for my studio will be, is yet to be explored. Shared? More production space? Portable? Ideas?</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - Design Coherently - To be able to create coherent objects and spatial experiences, I’ve come to find that I myself need to BE coherent with what I do. It has become more and more important to me to feel connected and invested in what and whom I work with, in the ideas we explore and problems we solve. <image:title>Journal - Manifest Aesthetically - Ten years ago in Tokyo, me and my husband visited an atelier practising traditional laquer skills, but with a contemporary expression. We bought two boxes, one black and white with dots, and one with gold leaf. I will always cherish them and they carry a daily reminder of the whole wonderful trip. In this space, the aesthetic considerations ran through the whole experience.</image:title>
<image:caption>And I happened to be very well adapted to the environment, which is an important reminder to understand and be curious how your audience perceive your brand and can engage in your story. Who are you talking to? Which aesthetic language do you use when in dialogue?</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - Manifest Aesthetically - To develop your aesthetic sensiblitity and skills, I’ve found that these three parts are fundamental. I also teach these to my design students (I have 12+ years experience of teaching design, and I love it.)</image:title>
<image:caption>TO SEE. Practise noticing, discovering, feeling the beauty and abundance around you. TO COLLECT. Be a hunter gatherer for things that intrigue you. <image:caption>Aesthetics is not merely a superficial story. It’s fundamental to us humans. Maybe we’re just trying to recreate or even come close the perfect balance, vitality and attention to detail that we’ve seen in nature, in light, in how things grow and structure itself. <image:title>Journal - In pursuit of beautiful concepts – distill to distinct - When we understand a brand and/or the underlying story, we can create a design concept that manifests it physically. One of the underlying ideas was to design the space like a “spatial portfolio”. Large scale typography, a graphic black thin line becomes a shelf for the studio’s award winning work.</image:title>

<image:title>Journal - In pursuit of beautiful concepts – distill to distinct - In adherence to defining strategic colour schemes, material choices etc. the design concept can also bring forward functional and idea based aspects. This is an early inspirational moodboard in the BVD project, defining a completely new space, an atelier, where the hands on skills and everyday work with packagings, mockups, presentation could be supported and also communicated and invited into for clients and collaborators.</image:title>

<image:caption>This week’s Monday Moodboard was a curated simple little concept with materials and objects all relating to time in one way or another. No.6 of the 10 Principles: Relate to time. That is something really interesting I look forward to look into further on in this bi-weekly journal.</image:caption>

If I’m not close to the sea, I feel disconnected, almost claustrophobic. The sea also is the metafor for everything being connected in one way or another. We share the same planet and the sea connects us globally. What is essential to you and how can that translate in interiors and design with a strong sense of identity? Photo: Ea Czyz</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The result is (not) everything. - A collaborative approach when designing for all senses.</image:title>
<image:caption>When the visitor came to the opening night of Sensory Richness exhibition at Dahl Agenturer, they were treated with something for all their senses. The material boards had inspiring, tactile materials in different colour palettes, images to lead them to the source of the idea. They could taste different apetizers and snacks that belonged to each theme. In the background you could here the playlist specially created for the evening. Working so coherently and manifest a concept in so many layers, in one coherent experience – quite natural, right? But quite rare. Why? Well, because it really calls for an open, sharing process, where we can toghether understand and then build on an idea. That’s designing ONENESS to me. How can we get better and better at this? How can we even design the project briefs, so that it doesn’t reject the creative power of openness, collaboration and not predecided results, instead results that are fuller answers to real questions.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f5e0bfec6338a638c78fd75/79611d17-9c68-4cda-9f5f-5379c841ae2e/B86D3D3A-704B-4AEC-B50C-32B4B597E693_1_105_c.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Journal - The result is (not) everything. - Plan the process well, but have an open mind about what the result will be.</image:title>
<image:caption>This is from just the other day, when me and Marcia experimented with ways of using an ochre pigment she had collected from Zimbabwe, where she grew up. In just two hours we managed to produce a whole table (and by that I mean our large scale studio table) of material/paint samples. So a good process might take some time but it can make you really productive and set a project off on really good terms and a confident and joyful spirit. Another – very important thing – is when you work hands on, sharing ideas, thoughts and anchoring them with visuals and real things, you find things and can take steps in unexpected directions. full of insights, curiosity and determination. And then another one, and another one. Steps you simply cannot sit at you desk and “figure out”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The result is (not) everything. - Sharing the tools on how to visualise dreams and manifest ideas.</image:title>
<image:caption>This is me and Anna Vogel getting together sharing how we use Vision Boards, Moodboards and just visual manifestation in general to make the abstract physical, ideas tangible and sharable. To share this, and combine our skills as Designer (me) and Business Coach (Anna) we created Dream Lab, to share these tools and see Dreams become reality in a safe space. <image:title>Journal - The result is (not) everything. - Experiment, test and iterate.</image:title>
<image:caption>Here’s some colour samples for our product launch for our textile screens at Dahl Agenturer during Stockholm Design Week Feb 6th–12th. There really isn’t such a thing as a completely finished design, we should always have an iterative approach to everything we do. It can always be better, we gain insights, new perspectives, problem solve and new ideas for various features that brings value. The screens will from now on be called SEQUENCE textile screens. Though you can choose between four patterns and a standard colour scheme, what we really love is to create completely project bespoke design. So bring us your project moodboards, material boards, layouts and colour schemes and we create it with you! If you want to come to the Artist Talk on lunchtime Thursday the 9th, where I present this project and product possibilities, you can book it here. There you can also sign up for the cocktail event on Tuesday 7th. Hope to see you there!</image:caption>

<image:title>Journal - The result is (not) everything. - Entière LAB was set up as a resource for creativity – to explore, experiment, and share.</image:title>
<image:caption>I set up Entière LAB to really dive deep into the process. HOW can we work, to create with more insight, inspiration, creativity and really use our unique skills as designers? As far as result goes, I’ve actually made the process the star here, and in exhibitions, installations and events showcased the process, not the finished result, or rather as the result. For the Love of Pine and Sensory Richness. And this is now also an abundant platform for creating more finished objects, spaces and experiences from. Continuously. I look forward to start new projects and set up a process where unique ideas can arise and people can feel inspired to share and take part – so that the result will be something we co-created. I also love to share tools and insights about a collaborative design methods, design thinking and hands-on tests, moodboards and material boards. How we can invite a more holistic approach, transcend disciplines and inspire all senses. Book a talk for your next event or workshop for your team to boost creativity!
